The Truth About Cannabis Dependency

  • These days, the subject of cannabis dependency is one of enormous debate and widespread confusion. As far as the vast majority of cannabis advocates are concerned, there is in fact no such thing as marijuana addiction. There are also a great many experts and medical professionals who support the theory that cannabis in its own right is not an addictive substance. But at the same time, there is no escaping the fact that a substance or activity does not have to be officially categorised as addictive for a person to develop a harmful dependency.

    Other examples include gambling, shopping and even sex – activities which are not considered to be addictive, but can nonetheless lead to the development of addictive behaviours. In the case of cannabis, it is the way in which it has the potential to become such an integral and important part of a person’s life that makes it precisely the kind of substance to which it is possible to become dependent.

    Addiction Vs Dependency

    What’s important to remember is that there is a clear distinction between dependency and addiction. Generally speaking, addiction refers to a scenario where an individual has used or abused something to such an extent that they have developed a strong physical or psychological need for it. If whatever it is they are addicted to was to be removed from their life, they would suffer extreme and potentially dangerous side effects and withdrawal symptoms.     In the case of dependency, there are similarities between the two but also important differences. In this instance, it may simply be that an individual has become so used to using something or behaving in a certain way that they cannot imagine getting by without it. They do not necessarily have a physical addiction to cannabis, but nonetheless do not believe they would be able to get by without using cannabis day in and day out. But rather than deciding to, it’s more likely that they will carry on the same way regardless. On the plus side, the vast majority of scientific studies have shown that cannabis is not nearly as harmful as tobacco when consumed on a regular basis. Nevertheless, the effects cannabis has on the individual using it have the potential to be detrimentally life affecting.     When Habits Become Harmful

    The simple fact of the matter is that it is entirely down to the individual in question to determine when and where their own use of cannabis or anything of a similar nature has become harmful. The reason being that it is not until you yourself genuinely believe that there is a problem to address that it becomes possible to address it.
