Global focus: mental health issues are on the rise

  • Even though people consider that today’s life is visibly easier to live, more and more people suffer from mental health issues. In fact, mental illnesses are on the rise and people can’t explain why. Fifty years ago, less people struggled with the unpleasant effects of depression or anxiety. The causes behind this dramatic change are not clearly delimited, but one thing is certain – the social environment changed and that’s where all the problems come from. The parental pressure and their expectations changed, technology evolved, facile access to information has downsides too, social media can be toxic, people became workaholics and money-centered – the list can go on and on to back up the rise of mental health issues. Here are some worrying facts related to this topic:

    Real facts

    The idea of mental illnesses rising is not just a hinge. Many studies and researchers said that the tendency is real and it has a serious impact on the entire world. In order to make the research easier, a number of researchers from the Langone Medical Center in the US placed the most important and dangerous mental illnesses under the same name – psychological distress. Then, the studies went on and researchers found out that almost 9 million people suffer from psychological distress in US only. The numbers are scary, but they are the only ones who can convince the world that this is a situation that needs to be handled with care.

    Other studies were related to suicide and how the rates grew in the past few years. The suicide rates among students only went up with almost 8%. What’s even more disturbing is that some universities interviewed their students individually and found out that at least 4% considered suicide as an option at least once.  

    Trends and how they affect mental health

    The current trends are the most important triggers of mental health issues. Besides the obvious ones such as the addictive use of technology that leads to Electronic Screen Syndrome which alters the sleep, gives insomnia and thus produces mental health disorders, there are many more other trends that affect the mental health of millennials. Even binge eating is dangerous now and can lead to serious consequences if not kept under control.

    The breakdown of the idea of a family leads to sexual orientation confusion and even abuse; the reduced face-to-face interaction which can cause communication problems in the future; the facile access to recreational drugs which often leads to addiction and an increase in drug rehab admissions; the exposure to aggressive behavior which can lead to abuse of all kinds – all these are trends that could alter the mental health of today’s society.

    Possible solutions

    The rising trends can’t be stopped, but awareness and rethinking options should be the main priority of people who are tempted to slip into a mental illness. Seeking mental health support should be normalized, so that people can make use of the available resources they have and avoid an unfortunate ending of their situation. Seeing a positive change in terms of trends is not likely in the future years, meaning that the only solution remains staying on the right path from the very beginning.
